Why Time Travellers (Still) Cannot Change the Past

  Abstract	Resumo: Defendemos, num texto anterior, a impossibilidade de os viajantes do tempo poderem mudar o passado, concluindo que, ou os supostos modelos de mudança do passado incorrem em contradição, ou então dizem respeito a “impedir” o passado, o que não equivale a mudar o passado. Goddu respondeu a esta nossa argumentação, defendendo que o seu modelo de hiper-tempo garantia a possibilidade real de os viajantes do tempo mudarem o passado (não o impedindo). Neste trabalho começamos por discutir o que seria requerido para sustentar a afirmação de que um determinado modelo envolve a mudança do passado e não o seu impedimento. Em seguida, consideramos o modelo de hiper-tempo de Goddu e um outro modelo anterior de Meiland. Argumentamos que nenhum destes autores satisfaz as condições necessárias para fundamentar a afirmação de que os seus modelos envolvem a mudança (não o impedimento) do passado. Por fim, defendemos uma posição mais forte, a de que é impossível apresentar um modelo simultaneamente coerente e afirmativo da possibilidade da mudança (não evitamento) do passado.  Palavras-chave: identidade diacrónica, identidade diahyperchronic, mudar o passado, problema da mudança, viajem no tempo  Abstract: In an earlier paper I argued that time travellers cannot change the past: alleged models of changing the past either fall into contradiction or else involve avoiding, not changing, the past. Goddu has responded to my argument, maintaining that his hypertime model involves time travellers changing (not avoiding) the past. In the present paper I first discuss what would be required to substantiate the claim that a given model involves changing rather than avoiding the past. I then consider Goddu’s hypertime model and an earlier model due to Meiland. I argue that neither author does what would be required to substantiate the claim that the model involves changing (not avoiding) the past. I go on to give reasons for the stronger claim that no-one can present a coherent model and also substantiate the claim that it involves changing (not avoiding) the past.  Keywords: changing the past, diachronic identity, diahyperchronic identity, hypertime, problem of change, time travel
