Abstract | Top-down causation can emerge only through a particular combination of formal constraints and physical-chemical processes. However, constraints of this kind are ubiquitous in nature but do not display top-down processes in the abiotic world. The notion of the network can help us to bridge this gap and let understand how recurrent operations and the necessity of codes for controlling them allows the emerging of control, which is crucial for having top-down causation. |
