Abstract Maria Peregrina de Sousa was a nineteenth-century Portuguese writer relatively famous during her time for her publications in a few Portuguese and Brazilian journals and magazines. Although almost completely forgotten and neglected nowadays, her work is notorious for, among other aspects, a female perspective on love-related topics, much cherished among romantic authors. For this reason, the reading and studying of her work is essential to the creation of a better, wider and fairer understanding of Portuguese Romanticism, that takes into consideration female as well as male authorship. This article focuses on analysing the clash between romantic love and familial love suffered by several of Maria Peregrina’s female protagonists, a topic that is at the center of many of her texts. Contrary to the option made by many contemporary male authors, hers is for familial love – the one most commonly emerging victorious from that clash. We aim to understand her reasons for privileging the familial relationship in detriment of the romantic one, and to question if that choice can be said to be a conscious contestation, although subtle, of the male predilection for romantic love and love-stricken female protagonists, current among the most famous Portuguese romantic writers.
