Abstract Central figures of modern philosophy and of the Enlightenment have employed legal images to elucidate key points of their thought. This paper provides an overview of the legal metaphors of this period, focusing on two leading philosophers in this respect: Francis Bacon and Immanuel Kant. Firstly, we present a brief outline of the interest which legal themes aroused in the Enlightenment, illustrated in an exemplary way through legal images presented in several discussions on speculative matters. Then, we discuss the strong juridical matrix of Bacon’s thought, which becomes manifest, for instance, in his thesis on the rights of mankind over nature and the interrogation to which man must submit it. Finally, Kant’s multiple political-legal metaphors are briefly discussed with emphasis on the legal sense of Kant’s concept of deduction. Keywords : Bacon, Enlightenment, Kant, Law, Metaphors
