Abstract: The article shows in the first place how the remarkable success of modern science of the seventeenth-century, rooted in the criteria of univocity, mathematization, homogeneity and mechanization, and its claim of explaining all empirical events in terms of efficient causality by formalizing and quantifying the regularities as laws of nature, led the notion of divine action to be seen as a “violation” of those laws, and, therefore, rationally problematic. Hence, after an analysis of the recent proposals by Nancey Murphy and John Polkinghorne for the concept of divine action, based on Quantum Mechanics and the Theory of Chaos, the article suggests how, from several data of contemporary science, an enlargement of the notion of causality and the retrieving of the causal categories of the Aristotelian-Thomistic tradition, becomes possible and meaningful.
