Abstract Starting from a linguistic analysis of Oedipus Tyrannus 711-714 (in which the character of Iocaste refers the content of the oracle given to her husband Laios) and stressing the importance of the couple ὅστις γένοιτo (whose interpretation is still controversial), this article aims at explaining how Sophocles disseminated throughout his pièce a fatalistic vision of Oedipus’ story.
