| Abstract | In this paper we propose a conception of Virtue Ethics based on ancient eudaimonic ethics. We argue that in these conceptions the notion of virtue is understood as an excellent state of the soul, in which the distinction between happiness and morality is overcome. We’ll try to show that this approach makes easier for Virtue Ethics to deal with several of its problems. We also argue that many of the elements present in the contemporary debate about virtue ethics can be understood from the issue of the distinction between morality and happiness. Finally, we argue that our approach also allows a better assessment of how difficult can be to adopt a virtue ethics in contemporary societies. |
