  Abstract	Abstract: After a summary of the steps taken by the Catholic Church in the aftermath of Galileo’s condemnation, in order to adapt itself to the progressive, universal acceptance of the heliocentric theory, the main part of the article deals with the xx century. It focuses first on the vicissitudes of the publication of Mons. Paschini’s book on Galileo, which appeared only posthumously and with “corrections” towards the end of the Second Vatican Council. It then considers the working of the Galileo Commission, instituted in 1981 as a concrete follow-up of the desire expressed by John Paul ii, in his well known speech of 1979, to reach a final, unbiased judgement on the Galileo Affair. Such a judgment is contained in the speeches of cardinal Poupard and of John Paul ii (1992), a critical appraisal of which is offered in the final part of the article. Resumo: Depois de uma apresentação sumária dos passos dados pela Igreja Católica, na sequência da sua própria condenação de Galileu e, agora, em ordem a se adaptar à aceitação progressiva e universal da teoria heliocêntrica, a parte central do presente artigo debate sobretudo questões surgidas durante o século xx. Nesse sentido, o artigo trata em primeiro lugar das vicissitudes relativas à publicação do livro de Monsenhor Paschini sobre Galileu, publicação essa que acabou por acontecer apenas a título póstumo, e não sem significativas “correcções”, na parte final do Concílio Vaticano ii. Em seguida, o artigo analisa também os procedimentos da Comissão Galileu, instituída em 1981 como consequência directa do desejo expresso por João Paulo ii no seu conhecido discurso de 1979 de que se chegasse a um juízo final e sem partidarismos acerca do Caso Galileu. Esse juízo está contido nos discursos do Cardeal Poupard e de João Paulo ii (1992), discursos estes de que o artigo, nomeadamente na sua parte final, também oferece uma avaliação crítica.
