| Abstract | In the last two decades, the number of graduates has increased in Portugal, currently representing about 15% of the portuguese population with working age and, simultaneously, the rate of unemployment and precarious or atypical labor relations have also grown. The experience of work alternating atypical labor relations and unemployment has become a reality in today’s graduates careers. The purpose of this article is to conduct an integrative review of existing literature on the impact of unemployment and precarious work in higher education graduates. Using ISI, Scopus and Ebsco databases, 83 publications were initially identified, and after removal of repeated publication, a total of 69 publications were considered. Of these, 31 were selected and after application of exclusion and inclusion criteria, 11 articles were included in this integrative review. Some of the impacts of unemployment found were lower levels of happiness, more investment in higher education, low wages, while in precarious situations were identified for example, geographical mobility, low probability of passing for regular contracts, loss of benefits and increased taxes, among others. Several studies identified identical impacts either in unemployment and precarious work: the postponement of the decision to have a second child and the requirement of rapid adaptation, flexibility and versatility in functions performed, among others reported. We found that 5 of the 11 studies reported impacts of both conditions simultaneously, unemployment and precarious work and so, considering this findings, we propose the integrated study on the impacts of alternating experiences of unemployment and precarious work in higher education graduates. |
