| Abstract | This paper reconsiders the contemporary relevance of Schelling’s Naturphilosophie in light of the ecological crisis of the Anthropocene. Rather than offering a purely historical interpretation, it develops an exercise in ecological reason by examining Schelling’s diagnosis of the modern estrangement from nature and its philosophical consequences. The analysis argues that Schelling understood the reduction of nature to an object of reflection as the origin of a pathological separation between humanity and its living ground—a separation that anticipates the logic underlying contemporary ecological devastation. By placing Schelling in dialogue with thinkers such as Bruno Latour, Pierre Charbonnier, Maurice Merleau-Ponty, and Murray Bookchin, the paper shows how Naturphilosophie can be reinterpreted as a critique of anthropocentrism and as a philosophical resource for rethinking the relation between humanity and the Earth. It concludes that Schelling’s conception of nature as an irreducibly living, generative subject provides an enduring framework for understanding the ecological crisis not merely as an environmental problem but as a crisis of reason itself. |
