| Abstract | Not unknown and not unappreciated, Maria Archer remains an author of the 20th century, largely forgotten. As a writer between 1935 and 1963 she produced many novels, dramas and essays. As a journalist, she published many ethnographic articles, notable amongst which her pieces on the “overseas provinces”, the Portuguese Africa in which she lived in her younger years. Though published widely in magazines and newspapers, these articles today remain unknown for the most part. In self-imposed exiled in Brazil from July 1955, due, in part, to heavy censorship by the Salazariste regime, Maria Archer continued her journalistic and writing endeavours, notably writing a column for the “Suplemento feminino” of O Estado de São Paulo newspaper from late ‘55 to ‘57. One hundred and seven articles, texts largely overlooked, tell all kinds of stories behind which are outlined the story of the life of Maria Archer and the history of the lusitanity in the middle of the twentieth century. |
