Abstract The present work is addressing the problem of causation, in particular to analyze physical processes as irreversibility. For such a goal, we consider the notion of causation in the context of physics associated with the concept of time, taking as a starting point a set of definition for measurement in physics using the following concepts: the state of a physical system, the space-time symmetry (and the breaking of symmetry) and a physical system described by a field. This procedure can shed light on causation in physics, a problem still under controversy, in particular in non-abelian quantum field theory at finite temperature. Initially a general characterization of physical causation is presented, followed by a definition of restricted causation. Considering constitutive elements of a physical (mechanical) theory, we then discuss the notion of causation and time-irreversibility.
