Abstract Burnout is a psychological response to chronic work related stress of an interpersonal and emotional nature that affects professionals in service organizations who work in direct contact with the clients or users of the organization. About teachers, the concern from the scientific community is growing, because beyond teacher’s health and quality of life affected, promotes losses on educational environment, on teacher-student-community relationship and on the learning quality. Thus, the objective of this study was to evaluate if the autonomy can be as mediating variable in the relationship between workload and the Burnout dimensions. The research involved 679 teachers from public schools. It was used as research instrument the Questionnaire for the Assessment of Burnout Syndrome, version for teachers, the Autonomy Scale of the Battery of Psychosocial Risk Assessment and the Subscale of Workload the Organizational Stress Questionnaire. The results obtained with linear regression analysis confirmed the hypothesis that autonomy plays a mediating role between workload and the dimensions of Burnout. The result demonstrates the importance of interventions directed to development of autonomy in teachers as a measure of prevention or rehabilitation of the burnout syndrome.
