Abstract The article explores the theme of concealment in Homer’s Odyssey. The concealment of identity either by the omission of biographical data or by wearing a disguise is a common literary device throughout the book. This persistent use of the identity concealment of different characters, especially Ulysses, entails a rich symbolic meaning that is worth exploring. It is the precisely the main goal of this article to present and discuss such symbolic. After presenting an overview of the Odyssey from the point of view of the theme of concealment, the symbolic of concealment will be analyzed. Four aspects of this symbolic will be discussed: concealment as a parable of the human being self-discovery; concealment as a warning that one not to judge according to the appearances; concealment and the search for justice; the erotic connotation of concealment.
