Abstract This study aims to analyze two plays by the Portuguese writer José Saramago: A Segunda Vida de Francisco de Assis and In Nomine Dei. Both have a strong relationship with history, especially the history of religion: the first, a modern revival of the life of the saint who abandoned wealth to dedicate himself to the poor; the second, about the siege and battle between Anabaptists and Catholics in Münster in the sixteenth century. Using his characteristic irony, the author writes the two works in the intention of rewriting history, reflecting on what was and what could have been, but not in a nostalgic or longing way but in a postmodern, critical and parody style.
