Abstract Between 1513 and 1525, Niccolò Machiavelli wrote his well-known works on political, military and historical subjects. In life, he saw only Dell’arte della guerra be published in 1521, having his other fundamental writings – Il principe, Discorsi and Istorie fiorentine – published only after 1531, four years after his death, in June 1527. The immediate sales success of his works can be proven by the large number of reissues promoted by different publishers, especially in the second quarter of the 16th century. In addition, they were soon translated into French, English, Spanish and Latin. This article aims to explore the contexts of the first reception of these works, mainly in the Iberian and Italic peninsulas of the second quarter of the century, having as a limit the year 1559, when the presence of author and his works in the Catholic Church’s Index of prohibited books concretizes a new paradigm concerning its acceptance. The paper is concluded highlighting the specific reaction of Portuguese bishop Jerónimo Osório da Fonseca, as one could consider it peculiar at his time and precursor of a curious trend for the second half of the century: the simultaneous vehement criticism and praise for the practices Machiavelli has suggested, provided they are kept away from his name. Anti-Machiavellian, Machiavellian and “Machiavellic” at the same time, Osorio seems to summarize the whole panorama of the first reactions to the secretary´s writings. In the pages of his works one can find the most virulent contemporary criticism to Machiavelli’s writings; the praise – although concealed – for his propositions on the art of war; and – the most awesome – the concealment of this praise, cunningly deceiving his readers by making Machiavelli’s words his own.
