Abstract | Abstract: Since the 1960s philosophers of science have claimed that theory and experiment are closely linked (experimentation and observation are theoretically laden). However, this statement is not unanimous. Some philosophical tendencies have emphasized the virtues of the experimentation, and according to them, experiments have their own life. That is to say, experiments may exist independently of any theory. In this sense, the present article focuses on and analyses the viability of this last stance, especially within the context of scientific practices. Hence, besides the introduction of a threefold argument in favour of the thesis that scientific experiments have their own life, the author of the article considers three theoretical replies and, finally, proposes an account of both how to depolarize the tension between theory and experiment and how to look at their mutual relationship from a pragmatic point of view.
