Abstract The invention of the printing press had an enormous impact in England, where a number of printers were established soon thereafter. Some puritan sects resorted to these newly founded printers to produce large runs of pamphlets through which they disseminated alternative versions of reality to a considerable number of citizens. These pamphleteers sough the removal of the monarchy and the installation of a Puritan republic. This was in fact achieved with the establishment of the Commonwealth of England. Such a political achievement would have been impossible without the technical capacity to disseminate information to citizens. Hobbes was faced with the deliberate use of a new means of communication utilized to initiate political change. Such disinformation fostered enough widespread dissatisfaction to trigger violent social movements and ultimately the English Civil War. Hobbes describes the authors of this pamphlets as “worms” who, from within the political body, feed on the republic, making it sick. In his reflections on them, Hobbes assumes that, given the political effects of pamphlets, the problem requires a political response. Today, the fake news that is launched in the digital ecosystem, has no less political impact than the pamphleteering of Hobbes’s time. This chapter intends to look at the political impact of fake news, seeking, with the help of Hobbes’s theoretical apparatus, to find a political response to the management of this current civic danger.
