    Abstract This article is dedicated to the history of the smallpox epidemic that took place in Japan from 735 to 737 and the its consequences to the Japanese religious landscape, more especifically, the construction of the Todaiji temple in Nara which houses a 15 meter statue of cosmic Buddha Vairocana.
