| Abstract | Princess Santa Joana is a very important personage in the history of Aveiro. Daughter of king Afonso V, she entered the Monastery of Jesus in 1472 where she lived until her death in 1490. Soon after, her relics were already object of a real devotion and she was considered as a saint. The main object of this investigation was to analyse the importance of these relics in the development of the Monastery of Jesus and the borough of Aveiro as well as to reflect on the utilization of these as main elements in the propagation of faith and power. Through the analysis of the relics and a thorough bibliographic survey we also tried to understand how the veneration of her image and of her remains were used as a cohesion factor between the monastic community and the civil population which transformed the monastery in a prestigious religious centre, giving an important prominence to the institution and to the borough of Aveiro. |
