Abstract Illuminating environmentalism and health care in light of virtues brings innovative proposals and old recipes. At one extreme are scholars unearthing an abundance of virtues to meet 21st Century commitments to diversity and inclusion. At the other are scholars wielding tradition’s prudence to overcome impasse in applied ethics and morals. The decisive issue for applying virtue: to depart or keep tradition. Between extremes is only the overhaul of tradition: observing cardinal and intellectual virtues as populating a contingent, but orderly model. Tradition’s model serves social movements and professions with virtue concepts applied prudently and observantly. Virtue concepts suitcased by tradition must be refreshed.
