  • Europe, Crisis, and Deconstruction in the Thought of Jacques Derrida

    Item Type Journal Article
    Author Lorenzo Marannino
Abstract This article investigates Jacques Derrida’s reflections on Europe, focusing on his 1990 essay The Other Heading and its connection to his early work on the genesis of philosophical and scientific structures. It argues that understanding Derrida’s conception of Europe requires examining the intrinsic link between the production and crisis of knowledge. Through an analysis of texts such as The Problem of Genesis in Husserl’s Philosophy, Introduction to Husserl’s Origin of Geometry and Structure, Sign, and Play in the Discourse of the Human Sciences, the article interprets European history as a process of continual self-redefinition through philosophical critique. Derrida’s deconstruction is a radicalisation of such critique because it seeks to reveal the paradoxical foundation underlying the constitution of knowledge. Deconstruction defines Europe not only as a social form grounded in self-questioning but as one now confronted with a radical challenge: the very questioning of the possibility of founding philosophical, scientific, and ethical discourse. In this sense, the article contends that deconstruction becomes synonymous with today’s Europe, which is confronted with the crisis of its foundational principles.
